Loco Café: celebrating Denton through breakfast

By Morgan Ashton Griffin

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.

Actually on some days when I want to spoil myself, I eat breakfast foods for every meal.  I guess I am not the most unbiased person to review Denton’s newest breakfast/lunch restaurant, Loco Café.  Or maybe I am the best person since I am a connoisseur of breakfast foods.

Anyway, I went into Loco Café, expecting a lot. See, Loco Café is owned by Ken Currin, who also owns The Greenhouse, which is up there with my top three favorite restaurants unique to Denton.

I wasn’t disappointed – simple as that.

The environment of the Loco Café was very different that the Greenhouse (which actually used to be a greenhouse). There is no wait-staff. Customers order at a register, pick up their drinks at the coffee bar, and then the food is quickly brought to their table.

I ordered the Loco Moco, their signature dish of stacked hash browns, fried or scrambled eggs topped with either cheddar or jack cheese, a biscuit either buttered with regular butter, honey butter, or jalapeño butter, salsa or gravy and a Loco Coffee.

As a picky eater, I was apprehensive when I saw that my eggs were served on my hash browns. To be honest, I am a child when it comes to food. It can’t touch. Well, I’m converted. I now always will eat my eggs in conjunction with my hash browns, thanks for that Loco Café.

As I ate and drank my coffee, I opened a book and read. The environment is perfectly conducive for reading, writing, doing homework, or studying for a big test.

The food was delicious, but the atmosphere was amazing. There were all sorts of people there, 20-somethings, a little old couple, middle-aged folks, all who were enjoying Loco Café.

Make sure to pay close attention to photographs on the wall.  They are of Denton landmarks, and they are all placed in the proper direction of that landmark.

Currin, who claims Denton as his adopted hometown, envisioned creating a restaurant that would be reminiscent of Jim’s Diner, a local breakfast place in Denton that all his friends and he went to on the weekends.

It is this “celebrating Denton” vibe that defines Loco Café.

Loco Café is a must-try for all Dentonites. Although a little bit pricey to enjoy on a regular basis for most college students, it is a great place to relax and taste a tantalizingly fresh breakfast meal.

Loco Café, located a couple minutes walking distance from TWU main campus at 603 No. Locust in Denton is convenient enough to walk to during a lunch break, therefore avoiding having to re-park.

Loco Café is open Monday thru Friday from 6 a.m.-2 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

  1. Loco is super yummy! It’s a little pricey for breakfast if you ask me but the convenience of having an awesome and locally owned breakfast joint close to TWU is worth the price. Since Ruby’s closed on the square and I mostly just go to Old West on the weekends, Loco is a super alternative for the Monday thru Friday breakfast craving.
